The desk represents a year's worth of work. I had the great fortune of learning to carve from a fellow in Paonia, and a wonderful collaboration with my good friend Paul, who did all of the drawings for the carvings. The desk was completely constructed before the carvings were begun, which took about three months to complete. The overall footprint of the desk is 7' by 10'. The wood for the countertop was 3" thick initially, to allow for the upturned ends, and the finished end panels were made with cherry that was initially 4" thick. At the back of the countertop there is a carved wave pattern edge of solid brass. The Otter that "floats" in the countertop is holding a real abalone shell!
